Resection of colorectal cancer metastases to the liver is often delayed for a few months after resection of the primary tumor.
However, findings from a recent study indicate that both resections can be safely performed in one operation, thereby avoiding a second surgical procedure. Dr. Eduardo de Santibanes and colleagues, from Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, Argentina, reviewed the outcomes of 71 patients who underwent simultaneous resection of a colorectal cancer and associated liver metastases at their institution between 1982 and 1998.
The median follow-up period was 29 months. The researchers’ findings are published in the August issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
