Regular dynamic strengthening exercises are just as effective at treating patients with subacute or chronic low back pain as the McKenzie method, which aims to extend the spine and centralize pain.
A study by Danish and Swedish researchers pared the effects of the McKenzie method in 132 patients with that of intensive dynamic strengthening training in 128 patients who had had low back pain for at least eight weeks.
The researchers found no difference between the two methods in pain recorded by patients after eight weeks outpatient treatment, followed by two months of self-training at home, and also after eight months of follow up.
There was a tendency for lesser disability with the McKenzie method after two months of follow up. But immediately after the end of the treatment period, and after eight months of follow up, there was no difference.
