Early Intervention Reduces Rate of Angina in Patients at Moderate Risk for MI

In patients presenting with unstable coronary artery disease, early intervention significantly reduces the incidence of subsequent refractory or severe angina and so is preferable to a conservative strategy, according to preliminary results of the Randomized Intervention Trial of unstable Angina 3 (RITA 3).

“We have shown for the first time that, in moderate risk patients, that we have an impact that is primarily on refractory angina,” lead investigator Dr. Keith A. A. Fox told Reuters Health. “That is consistent overall with the prior trials of TACTICS and FRISC II.” Reporting in The Lancet for September 7, Dr. Fox, of the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, UK, and other British investigators prospectively compare results of two different strategies applied to 1810 patients with non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndromes.
