Findings from a phase I study suggest that a topical ceramide-dominant barrier repair emollient may be a useful adjunctive therapy for children with atopic dermatitis. Dr. Sarah L. Chamlin and colleagues from the University of San Francisco in California report their results in the August issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
While commonly used emollients and moisturizers hydrate the skin, they do not correct stratum corneum (SC) ceramide deficiency, the putative cause of abnormal epidermal barrier function seen in patients with atopic dermatitis, the researchers write.
