In patients with atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS), urinary cysteinyl leukotriene (Cys-LT) levels are increased during disease exacerbations, according to a report published in the August issue of Allergy.
In addition, the degree of elevation correlates with clinical status. The current findings suggest that Cys-LT biosynthesis (by eosinophils, for example) is enhanced during AEDS flare-ups.
Also, the link between urinary levels and clinical status may help explain why leukotriene antagonists have proven effective against AEDS symptoms in preliminary studies.
