Regular participation in an individual or group therapeutic exercise program reduces pain and improves physical functioning in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. These are the findings of a systematic review of 14 randomized trials involving 1633 patients with knee osteoarthritis.
The 14 trials selected for review evaluated individual, group, and home-based therapeutic exercise programs that included muscle strengthening, aerobic walking and balance coordination, according to Dr. Marlene Fransen of the University of Sydney in Australia and colleagues at the University of Toronto.
