Results from a recent review article indicate that using antibiotics for the treatment of Escherichia coli O157:H7 enteritis does not increase the risk of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
The findings suggest that antibiotic use is not a risk factor for HUS in patients with E. coli O157:H7 enteritis. However, “a randomized trial of adequate power, with multiple distinct strains of E. coli O157:H7 represented, is needed to conclusively determine whether” such therapy does increase the risk, the investigators note.
