US Vehicle-Emissions Laws Credited With Saving Lives

Nearly 12,000 lives have probably been saved by the reduction in vehicle carbon-monoxide emissions introduced in the US in the 1970s, according to a report published in the August 28th issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

As a result of the Clean Air Act of 1970, which mandated that vehicles release less carbon monoxide (CO) into the environment, manufacturers introduced new equipment that reduced CO emissions by 76%, lead author Dr. Joshua A. Mott, from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, and colleagues note.
