Menopause Promotes Release of Lead From Bone into Blood

Findings from a new study suggest that menopause enhances the release of lead from bone stores into the blood, which could place peri- and postmenopausal women at increased risk

for lead toxicity.

Dr. Susan A. Korrick, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and colleagues found that postmenopausal women with high bone lead levels who did not use estrogen were also likely to have high levels of lead in their blood.
