A regular diet, as opposed to a clear liquid diet, appears to be safe and efficacious as a first meal following intra-abdominal surgery in gynecologic oncology patients. Researchers at State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York, United States, enrolled 254 gynecologic oncology patients undergoing intra-abdominal surgery in a randomised, controlled trial of a regular diet versus a clear liquid diet as the first postoperative meal.
All patients received either the regular diet or the clear liquid diet on the first day following surgery, providing they did not have nausea, vomiting or symptoms of abdominal distension.
