Lumenis Ltd. announced on Tuesday that it received clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its ClearLight system for moderate inflammatory acne vulgaris.
The ClearLight system, which Lumenis said was approved for sale in Canada, Europe and Japan last year, was shown to destroy acne-causing bacteria using its high-intensity, narrow-band phototherapeutic light, the company said in a statement.
“Studies indicate about 40% of acne bacteria are resistant to antibiotics,” said Lumenis Executive VP Alon Maor in a statement. “And some treatments are now associated with very severe side effects. The ClearLight solution is designed as an attractive alternative to acne sufferers.”
