Intrathecal Anti-Tetanus Immunoglobulin Improves Outcome in Childhood Tetanus

Human tetanus immune globulin given intrathecally decreases mortality and improves outcome in childhood tetanus, Indian researchers report. Drs. Janaki Menon and Lulu Mathews of Thrissur Medical College in southern India evaluated the effectiveness of intrathecal tetanus immune globulin in 41 children admitted with tetanus between 1995 and 2001.

Tetanus was diagnosed based on the clinical triad of trismus, risus sardonicus and muscle spasms. None of the children had received a full course of the tetanus vaccine before presentation to the hospital, the researchers observed.

The children were managed with antibiotics, muscle relaxants and supportive measures, and a single dose of 250 IU of human anti-tetanus immunoglobulin (Tetglob) was given intrathecally. The findings are reported in the July issue of Indian Pediatrics.
