Breast-feeding is associated with a decreased risk of a woman developing systemic lupus erythematosus. This was a key finding of a population-based, case-control study of 240 female patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 321 control women.
The study was carried out by Dr. Glinda Cooper and colleagues. Dr. Cooper is based at the Epidemiology Branch of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Durham, North Carolina.
Breast-feeding was found to be associated with a decreased risk of developing SLE. There was a statistically significant trend for decreased risk of SLE with the number of babies breast-fed and the total weeks of breast-feeding. Number of pregnancies or live births did
not seem to be correlated to SLE.
