Uncomplicated Hand Lacerations Need Not Be Sutured

Aug. 12, 2002 — Uncomplicated lacerations of the hand need not be sutured, according to  esults of a randomized trial reported in the Aug. 10 issue of the British Medical Journal.

 Conservative management offered similar cosmesis, less pain, and reduced duration of treatment. “Every doctor is asked, ‘Will this cut need stitches?’ ” write James Quinn and colleagues from the University of California at San Francisco.

 “The value of closure and whether it is even needed have never been objectively studied.” Of 154 consecutive patients presenting at the emergency department with simple hand lacerations that would normally be sutured, 91 patients with 95 lacerations were enrolled in the study and received either sutures or conservative treatment.
