FDA Issues Warning on Chinese Weight-Loss Pills

WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Aug 13 -The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned Americans on Tuesday that two Chinese weight-loss products marketed under the names Chasu Diet Capsules and Chasu Gempi may be dangerous.

The FDA alert follows a similar action in Japan, where the products were linked with several illnesses and deaths. The FDA said it believed the deaths in Japan might have resulted from the presence of fenfluramine (Pondimin), which was removed from the market in 1997, along with dexfenfluramine (Redux), after being associated with heart-valve defects. Fenfluramine was typically prescribed along with phentermine in a combination commonly called “phen-fen.”
