NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Aug 13 – Patients hospitalized for alcoholism have only a small excess risk for pancreatic cancer, according to a report in the August issue of Gut. This
risk may be attributed to confounding by smoking.
Dr. W. Ye, of the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, and colleagues retrospectively analyzed the risk of pancreatic cancer among 178,688 patients admitted to the hospital for alcoholism, 3500 admitted for alcoholic chronic pancreatitis, 4952 for non-alcoholic chronic pancreatitis, 13,553 for alcoholic liver cirrhosis, and 7057 for non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis
between 1965 and 1994.
