– Intranasal administration of a virosomal influenza vaccine prevents recurrent acute otitis media in children, according to a report in the July 15th issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.
Previous studies have reported significant decreases in the incidence of acute otitis media with parenteral administration of inactivated influenza vaccine and with intranasal administration of live, attenuated influenza vaccine, the authors explain. Virosomes encapsulate antigenic viral proteins in a lipid bilayer, providing a formulation that can be administered intranasally without the risks associated with the use of live influenza particles.
Dr. Nicola Principi from University of Milan, Italy, and colleagues tested a virosomal influenza vaccine administered intranasally in a placebo-controlled, prospective, randomized, single-blind trial involving 133 children with recurrent acute otitis media.
