The bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine has a weak protective effect against asthma.
However, German researchers have found that non-German ethnicity offers a much stronger protective effect against atopic manifestations among the nearly 40,000 pre-school children they studied.
Investigators led by Dr. Christophe Grüber from the University Children’s Hospital, Charité, Humboldt University, Berlin and colleagues from the department of health statistics, City Senate of Berlin and Robert Koch Institute in Berlin analysed the association between BCG vaccination and atopic manifestations in 38,808 pre-school children whose average age was six years. Because many participants came from minority ethnic groups in the former West Berlin, they also looked at the effect of ethnicity on disease prevale.
