Spinal surgery in morbidly obese patients can produce satisfactory results, even though many patients tend to present late in the course of their symptoms and may require modifications in the use of standard neuroimaging, operative facilities, and treatment plans.
This was the conclusion of Dr AE Telfeian and colleagues of the Department of Neurosurgery, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, United States. Noting the increasing prevalence of obesity in the United States, these researchers sought to assess the results and complications of management of spinal surgery that required modification because of the patient’s obesity.
They hypothesized that the surgeon may need elective or emergency treatment plans that address the special needs of these patients.
