CT Scans Could Uncover More Malignancies in Patients with Collagen Disease

Patients with dermatomyositis or polymyositis are at high risk of malignancy and should be examined extensively using all available malignancy tests or screening methods, a retrospective study suggests.

Researchers from the University Hospital of Limoges, in France review the charts of 33 patients with dermatomyositis and seven patients with polymyositis. They found malignancies in 16 of 40 patients, and the diagnosis of cancer was made at the same time as the diagnosis of the collagen disorder, or sometimes shortly afterwards.

The retrospective review was mostly of patients with dermatomyositis (33 patients) with seven patients with polymyositis.
