Biosynthesis of cysteinyl leukotrienes is enhanced during exacerbation of atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS).
Polish researchers say inflammatory cells such as eosinophils are the most probable source. They point out that leukotrienes are potent mediators of allergic inflammation.
While the leukotriene role in the pathogenesis of allergic disorders is well established, the role in AEDS is not.
Investigators from J Dietl Hospital and Jagiellonian University in Cracow measured urinary cysteinyl leukotriene levels in 17 adults with AEDS and 17 non-atopic, healthy controls.
