British scientists recommended on Friday that a major trial of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) set to involve 22,000 women should continue, despite a US study showing the therapy can increase the risk of breast cancer, stroke, thrombosis and cardiovascular disease.
The American Women’s Health Initiative trial of 16,000 women taking combined HRT was stopped earlier this month after analysis showed the therapy raised the risk of strokes by 41%, MIs by 29% and breast cancer by 26%.
The UK study, called “WISDOM”, which is not due to end until 2012, is trying to find out if HRT–whether given as oestrogen combined with progestogen or oestrogen alone–affects
the risk of MIs, breast cancer, osteoporosis and dementia.
