In patients at risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, super paramagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is superior to triphasic spiral computer tomography (CT) for detecting lesions.
However, there are no differences between the techniques in terms of classification for treatment, according to a report in the July issue of Gut.
In a prospective study, Dr. J. Stoker, of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and colleagues compared the diagnostic accuracy and classification for treatment of spiral CT and SPIO-enhanced MRI. They evaluated 61 patients with an elevated alpha-fetoprotein level or with new focal lesions seen on screening ultrasound.
