German scientists are developing an expanding bone fixator that may improve treatment of bone fractures by pushing the healing bone to grow back to the right length.
The engineers working on the device say it should ensure that healing bones grow to the desired length. The ‘smart’ pin is telescopic and designed to extend by 1 mm a day, mimicking the normal rate of bone growth. Dr. Rainer Laur, head of the Bremen University Institute for Theoretical Electrotechnology and Microelectronics told Reuters Health he was working on the project with the firm Wittenstein Motion Control.
