Malnourished Children With Acute Cryptosporidiosis Prompt Cytokine Response

Undernourished children in Haiti with cryptosporidiosis produce elevated inflammatory T helper-2 cytokine and counterregulatory intestinal immune responses, say American researchers.

Specialists from several departments in various universities across the United States and Haiti undertook a triple cohort study designed to comprehend the mechanisms by which the cryptosporidium parvum can result in persistent diarrhoea and increase morbidity and mortality.

An unstated number of Haitian infants under 18 months of age were enrolled in the study. They were divided into three groups: children with cryptosporidium, those with diarrhoea due to other causes and healthy control subjects.
