Early Use of Etanercept Better Than Methotrexate For Rheumatoid Arthritis

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 09 –

In the early treatment of patients with active, erosive rheumatoid arthritis, etanercept has significant advantages over aggressively dosed methotrexate, although both are suitable monotherapies.

That’s according to data from the second year of the ongoing Enbrel Early Rheumatoid Arthritis trial, which confirm the results from the first year. At enrollment, study participants had had rheumatoid arthritis for no more than 3 years, had not received methotrexate, and were considered at high risk for progression of disease.

They were randomized to etanercept 10 mg SC twice weekly, 25 mg etanercept SC twice weekly, or 7.5 mg/week methotrexate (increased to 20 mg/week if needed), plus, for the first year only, opposite placebo tablets or injections
