Obesity and weight gain before diagnosis of diabetes are related to an increased risk of coronary heart disease in women with type 2 diabetes.
Weight change after diagnosis of diabetes was not associated with the risk of coronary heart disease, according to investigators.
The investigators, from Harvard School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, conducted a prospective study of 5,897 women with type 2 diabetes.
Patients were followed for up to 20 years. The women were aged 40 to 74 years with no history of cardiovascular disease or cancer when follow-up began. Body mass index was derived from reported height and weight for the year in which the patient reached the age of 18 years, in 1976 and in the current year.
Any changes in weight between the year of the 18th birthday and 1976 and after diagnosis of diabetes were also calculated.
