Rubefacients Protect Skin Against Moderate Cold

Rubefacient-enriched lipogels appear to be the most efficient formulations for maintaining skin temperature in the normal range during winter sports and other outdoor activities when the weather is moderately cold.

Dermatologists at the University Medical Centre of Liège, Belgium, noted that skin damage from cold is a serious problem for skiers and others who spend time outdoors when it is cold.

They point out that specific topical preparations are expected to give some protection by reducing heat loss occurring via water evaporation from the skin. To compare the efficacy of six topical formulations enriched or not with rubefacients and assess their role, 30 trained cyclists tested the products on their forearms.

The skin temperature and electrometric values were recorded at baseline after the test products were applied and after 30 minutes of cycling in moderately cold but humid outdoor conditions.
