In patients undergoing esophageal resection for carcinoma, transfusion of more than three units of blood during the perioperative period is an independent predictor of poor long-term survival, according to a recent report.
Perioperative blood transfusion has been associated with decreased survival for patients with colorectal, lung, liver, gastric, renal, and breast cancer, lead author Dr. Stephen M. Langley and colleagues from Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire, UK, note. However, studies investigating the link between transfusion and survival in esophageal cancer patients have yielded conflicting results.
