Chemotherapy may be of some benefit in children with resectable hepatocellular carcinoma, but appears of little help in those with advanced stage disease.
Dr. Howard M. Katzenstein, who is currently at Emory University in Atlanta, and colleagues compared outcomes of two different chemotherapy regimens in such patients.
After initial surgery or biopsy, the researchers randomized 46 children with hepatocellular carcinoma to receive therapy with either cisplatin, vincristine and fluorouracil or cisplatin and continuous-infusion doxorubicin. The findings appeared in the June 15th issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
