Different Types of HRT Have Varying Effects on CVD Risk Factors

The particular preparation and route of administration of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) influences changes in factors associated with risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to researchers.

In a cross-sectional study, Dr. Gordana M. Prelevic and colleagues from The Royal Free Hospital, London, UK, examined risk factors for CVD among healthy postmenopausal women who had been receiving HRT for at least 5 years and those who had not received any HRT.

Of the 256 women studied, 73 were taking tibolone, 60 were taking transdermal E2, 58 were taking conjugated equine estrogens (E) and 65 were not taking any HRT.

“The different type of HRT induced disparate changes in the various markers of cardiovascular disease,” the team explains in the May issue of Fertility and Sterility.
