Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide Receptor Important in Development of Obesity

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 19 –

Mice lacking a receptor for a gastric polypeptide fail to develop obesity when fed a high-fat diet, according to a report in the June 17th advance online issue of Nature Medicine, suggesting that inhibition of the polypeptide could be a useful strategy in preventing obesity. Overnutrition leads directly to obesity, the authors explain, but the molecular mechanisms linking the two remain unknown. Based on the release of gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) from duodenal endocrine cells upon absorption of fat or glucose, Dr. Yutaka Seino from the yoto University, Japan, and colleagues studied the effect of GIP receptor inactivation in mice.
