Episodic Cluster Headaches May Be Curbed By Civamide

Intranasal civamide, 50 micrograms, may be modestly effective in preventing episodic cluster headache.

 Joel R. Saper from the Michigan Headache Pain and Neurological Institute, Ann Arbor, Michigan, carried out this double blind study for the Intranasal Civamide Study Group. The project was carried out at 14 headache/neurology centres across the United States.

Twenty-eight patients were given civamide or its vehicle in a two to one ratio. Eighteen received 100 microL of 0.025% civamide (25 micrograms), and the other 10 received 100 microL of the vehicle, administered to each nostril via dropper once daily for seven days. Total daily dose of civamide was 50 micrograms.

 Those on civamide as compared with those on the vehicle had a significantly greater percent decrease in number of headaches from baseline to post-treatment during days one through seven and a trend to significance on days eight through 20.
