Risk Factors Boost Pregnancy Diabetes Prevalence Risk Six-Fold

Women with risk factors for gestational diabetes are about six times more likely to have the condition compared to low-risk women, according to the results of a retrospective cohort study.

This difference suggests that selective screening might be beneficial although this screening may entail the same disadvantages as selective screening strategies without any obvious benefits, study researchers say. The study, carried out by doctors from the University of Grenada in Spain, examined pregnancies of 2574 women.

 Four percent of the women with one or more risk factors – such as family history of diabetes, obesity and previous fetal macrosomia – had gestational diabetes as defined by American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology criteria, and 2.9 percent under American Diabetes Association guidance.
