An improved assessment system for diabetics who are admitted to hospital for reasons other than their diabetes can be used recurrently to monitor in-patient care and satisfaction. “Current systems are not achieving satisfactory in-patient glycaemic control and there is poor satisfaction with medical in-patient diabetes care,” say clinicians at the Salford Royal Hospital NHS Trust, Salford, England.
Their study reviewed the case notes of consecutive admissions from January to March 2001, excluding those with acute metabolic complications, acute myocardial infarction and pregestational or gestational diabetes.
Management of hyperglycaemia was recorded along with glycaemic control and frequency of blood monitoring.
Assessment of preadmission satisfaction with care was made by the diabetes treatment satisfaction questionnaire.
Satisfaction with in-patient diabetes management was assessed post-admission by a 12-stem questionnaire.
