Neurocognitive measures such as working memory may prove to be heritable phenotypic traits that can be used in linkage analysis for finding predisposing genes in schizophrenia. American and Finnish researchers, and scientists with Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts, investigated the heritability of working memory, verbal declarative memory and its different components, and both verbal and visual ability functions in 264 schizophrenia patients and first-degree relatives.
Subjects were drawn from an isolated geographical sub region in Finland with a well-ascertained pedigree structure.
The number of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for each of these neurocognitive measures was analyzed using Markov chain Monte Carlo segregation analysis.
