Differences Seen in New HIV Cases Among Whites and Africans in England

A retrospective case note review of new HIV cases appearing at an HIV treatment centre in London, England, indicate a reduction in new diagnoses among the white population, but an increase among black Africans between 1994 and 2000.

 However, the clinical and immunological parameters of disease appear to have worsened among the white population, while remaining stable among black Africans, say researchers at the Royal Free Centre for HIV Medicine in London.

A total of 144 patients were identified in 1994, 136 for 1997 and 110 in 2000.

 Over this time period, the proportion of white patients dropped from 72 to 48 percent. But the proportion of black Africans newly diagnosed with HIV rose from 24 to 45 percent.
