NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 05 – The results of a large study conducted in Indiana confirm the rationale behind the exclusion of asymptomatic individuals younger than age 50 from colon cancer screening.
Among individuals in this age group with an average risk of colon cancer, detection of a malignant lesion is extremely rare, according to a report in the June 6th issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Between 1995 and 2000, screening colonoscopy was conducted in 3421 persons, of whom 906 were between the ages of 40 and 49. Excluded were individuals who were symptomatic or who had a history of colorectal cancer, colorectal polyps or inflammatory bowel disease.
