Sensory hyper-reactivity is a common diagnosis in patients being investigated because of obscure airway symptoms.
Most of these patients do not demonstrate increased sensitivity to methacholine while displaying sensory hyper-reactivity.
Researchers from Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden studied airway sensitivity to inhaled capsaicin, the pungent ingredient in red pepper, in 52 consecutive patients referred for methacholine testing.
They compared cough sensitivity provoked with increasing concentrations of inhaled capsaicin in patients and in 40 healthy controls.
Airway symptoms induced by strong scents in the patients were also measured.
