Development of zygapophysial joints may be influenced by prenatal rotation of the lumbar spine, say German researchers.
They monitored sonographically 52 healthy fetuses, at a gestational age of nine to 36 weeks, for rotational movements of the lumbar spine. Results showed axial rotations in most of the examined foetuses.
Using multiplanar reconstruction of sonographic images, the researchers were able to exhibit exemplary segmental rotational values.
They validated the method by directly measuring the manually induced rotation of the
formalin-fixated foetus, additional to multiplanar reconstruction.
