In hypertensive patients with type 2 diabetes, losartan shows favorable effects on platelet activity when compared with candesartan, according to Italian researchers. “Both [of these angiotensin II receptor blockers] effectively lower blood pressure,” said Roberto Fogari, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Pavia, Italy, “but we see that losartan has more favorable effects on platelet aggregation than does candesartan.”
In fact, the study showed that losartan treatment resulted in improvement of platelet aggregation, while patients treated with candesartan saw no change in platelet aggregation, he said.
He presented the findings here Thursday at the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension (ASH). The candesartan patients experienced a significant increase in PAI-1 activation, but there was no similar PAI-1 activation in the losartan group. “PAI-1 increases are a marker of a detrimental effect on the platelet system,” Dr. Fogari said.
