Muscle sympathetic nerve traffic responses to spontaneous premature ventricular contractions are markedly impaired in congestive heart failure patients compared with hypertensive patients and healthy controls.
Investigators from multiple Italian institutions, including the Ospedale San Gerardo dei Tintori in Milan, studied 14 patients with untreated mild hypertension, 20 untreated congestive heart failure patients and 16 age-matched healthy controls.
Blood pressure, heart rate and muscle sympathetic nerve traffic responses to isolated monofocal premature ventricular contractions were evaluated.
Both essential hypertension and congestive heart failure patients showed significantly increased muscle sympathetic nerve traffic compared with controls.
