NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 29 – Treatment with eye drops containing 5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) and cytosine deaminase, the enzyme that converts 5-FC to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), inhibits fibroblast proliferation and could be a viable method of 5-FU delivery after glaucoma filtering surgery, according to a recent report.
Treatment with antimetabolites, such as 5-FU, is known to enhance the success rate of filtering surgery. However, overapplication of these drugs can cause severe side effects, and no controlled drug delivery system for 5-FU currently exists.
