Bone Mineral Density Related To Mortality In Elderly Men

There is a nonlinear relationship between bone mineral density and mortality in men which is independent of co-morbidity. In women, by contrast, there appears to be no significant relationship.

Investigators in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, noted that recent studies had shown that low bone mineral density was associated with a higher risk of mortality. They pointed out, however, that most studies had looked into this relationship only in women and presented their risk estimates per standard deviation change in bone mineral density.

That approach, with relative risks presented in the traditional way, might have missed a bone mineral density threshold, the investigators commented. This led them to carry out a study to model the relationship between bone mineral density and all-cause mortality.
