NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 12 – Treatment with alendronate plus calcium supplements reduces the risk of multiple symptomatic fracture among women with osteoporosis, according the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial.
Dr. Silvina Levis, of the University of Miami School of Medicine, and colleagues studied a subset of women enrolled in the Fracture Intervention Trial, including 2027 women who had at least one morphometric vertebral fracture at baseline and 1631 who had no vertebral fracture but met bone mineral density criteria for osteoporosis. The subjects were between the ages of 55 and 80 years.
