Histamine Blocker Adds Little to Management of Nocturnal Acid Reflux

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 09 – In patients being treated with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) who experience nocturnal gastric acid breakthrough, the addition of a histamine 2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) provides only a short-term benefit. "In the real world, most people develop tolerance to the H2RA," Dr. Joel E. Richter told Reuters Health.
Dr. Richter and colleagues at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation studied 20 patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and 23 healthy volunteers.
