NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Apr 10 An artificial anal sphincter improves quality of life in patients with fecal incontinence refractory to conventional therapies, according to a prospective interventional series published in the April issue of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum.
"Severe anal incontinence is a distressing condition that has a major impact on the quality of life of afflicted patients," lead author Paul-Antoine Lehur, MD, PhD, from the Clinique Chirugicale II in France, says in a news release.
Of 14 women and 2 men implanted with the Acticon Neosphincter, 11 had restored anorectal function at 2-year follow-up, both clinically and on manometry demonstrating increased maximal anal resting pressure. Postoperative improvement in quality of life was documented on a fecal incontinence assessment survey of lifestyle, coping behavior, depression/self-perception, and embarrassment.
