NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 04 – A recent case report indicates that endovascular closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) prior to surgical manipulation of long-bone fractures is feasible and may help prevent massive systemic embolization.
The presence and manipulation of long-bone fractures is known to release fat emboli that can ultimately enter the cerebral circulation, and patients with a patent foramen ovale are at particularly high risk, Dr. Alejandro M. Forteza and colleagues, from the University of Miami point out.
