WASHINGTON (Reuters Health) Apr 04 – Aventis Pharmaceuticals has updated the warnings section of the labeling for Lovenox (enoxaparin) to stress that the drug is not recommended for thromboprophylaxis in patients with prosthetic heart valves, according to new documents on the Web site of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The warning was added as a result of reports of prosthetic heart valve thrombosis in patients given the drug. "Some of these cases were pregnant women in whom thrombosis led to maternal deaths and fetal deaths," the company noted, adding that pregnant women with prosthetic heart valves may have a higher thromboembolism risk.
