Intravenous (IV) ondansetron therapy decreases vomiting in children with acute gastroenteritis, reducing the rate of hospital admission in children first treated in emergency and who have serum carbon dioxide equal to or greater than 15 milliequivalent per litre.
Children given the selective 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)-3 receptor antagonist ondansetron and IV fluids were more likely to stop vomiting completely than children on IV fluids and placebo, United States researchers found.
Thirty million US children develop acute gastroenteritis each year. Doctors evaluate approximately three million of such children and a large number receive emergency department care. An estimated 220,000 children younger than five years are hospitalised for dehydration secondary to acute gastroenteritis.
